Chapter 139:

I HATE YOU, JACK!

Jack’s heart seemed to stop as his vision pulsed. His breath came out unevenly, and his eyes widened with disbelief as he stared at the familiar machine.

"Hello? Hellllllllooooooo? Jack?" Jill said over and over again. Yet Jack wasn’t listening, as he walked slowly toward the bright red chassis of the mechanized biped, which had Lovelace-V2 stenciled on the side of its cockpit.

"Jack? Jack, what's wrong?"

"Hey lad, you ok?"

[Jack. Calm yourself.] A myriad of voices called out. Yet Jack's emotions rose as the implications of what he was looking at hit him like a freight train.

Jack stood in front of the familiar machine. It was repaired, given a new paint job, but it was still the same machine.

"No." Jack whispered, touching the words that read Lovelace.

"What?" Jill said, her expression twisting with confusion.

"Why do you have this?!" Jack's head snapped toward Jill, who flinched at his response.

"I uhm… I'm learning how to pilot it, I want to be-"

"No." Jack stated firmly.

"No?"

"No, you can't pilot a MechFrame!" Jack said, his tone rising. He used every ounce of willpower he had not to snap at his baby sister from the panic and anger he was feeling.

[Jack. Just calm down. It's harmless if she's just piloting it.] Sahaqiel tried to reason, yet memories of Eleanor flashed in his mind: the shattered cockpit, the woman dying in his arms, his powerlessness to save her.

Not for Jill. In Jack's mind he was hit with images of Jill dying, of her being in that cockpit, of her dying in his arms. He couldn't allow that. He wouldn't allow that.

"But I got permission-"

"I DON’T CARE WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION, I SAID, NO!" Jack snapped, unintentionally releasing Mana, causing the girl to flinch and bringing Jin, Felicity, and Lyndis rushing to his location with armed guards.

"What's going on here? Why are you yelling at your sister?" Jin demanded.

Jack turned, demanding to know who thought it was OK to allow his sister to pilot a MechFrame.

Suddenly a mist of blood appeared, depositing Selfia, along with Duchess Bell.

"I did." Duchess Bell said, a frown on her face as she eyed the fuming Jack.

"Why?!"

"Because your sister is old enough to begin making decisions for herself. She is an excellent pilot, with a high aptitude even without the Celunni System implant-"

Jack's head snapped toward Selfia.

"We had a deal." He hissed.

"Hey! I honored that deal. Besides, it’s harmless Jack, she’s just piloting." Selfia said, her jaw clenching and unclenching slightly. "We even retrofitted the chassis to allow manual control over the nerve input so that Jill wouldn't need an implant."

"YOU KNEW ABOUT THIS?!"

Suddenly a hand was tugging on Jack's shirt, drawing his attention. It was Jill, her eyes beginning to tear up but holding back the tears that were already breaking Jack's heart.

"I'm just learning Jack. It's ok. One day I'll be as cool as Lieutenant Eleanor! I swear!" Jill cried, a half worried smile on her face as she tried to convince her brother it was ok.

You don't know. Jack's eyes widened.
